History
The Department of Mental Health, School of Medicine, Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS) was established in 1947, as a part of The Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, State University of Mongolia. The first chairman of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry was Prof. Liberzon G.Y., Russian neurologist, in 1947-1951. The first national lecturer and Chairman of the Department of Neurology was Gotov LODON (1951-1968), the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Mongolia. Professor G.Lodon, a correspondent member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, has written several major works on cerebrovascular disease, neuro- infections, and spinal paralysis, and he has dedicated his creative life for the development of this professional field with L.Dagzma, the Honored Doctor of Mongolian People’s Republic.

Dorjjadamba, are an Honored Doctor of Mongolia and S.Byambasuren, an Honored Teacher of Mongolia. The history of our Department is a part of the development of mental health care in Mongolia and the academic training of the professional psychiatrists, nursing and trained professionals. Since 2005, the Department of Mental Health has been operating independently.

Mission
The aim is to provide scientific evidence-based knowledge, skills, and competences to the legal environment for the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and care of the mental patients with the most common mental and behavioral diseases among the population at all levels of health care.

Graduate training
The Department of Mental health offers two research degrees (Ph.D. and MSc). Research degrees can be completed full- or part-time. Areas of study include clinical psychiatry, child & adolescent psychiatry, suicidology, laboratory-based neuroscience, literature synthesis, and addictology.
Postgraduate training
Residency training on general psychiatry, Specialized course on addictology, Specialized course on psychotherapy, Specialized course on mental health nursing, Specialized course on forensic psychiatry, Short-time training with credit (CME), Clinical discussion among psychiatrists and other professionals, Workshops and seminars.
