History of the department
The Department of Family Medicine was founded in 1996 by the order of ‘’A/69’’ from the Director of the Mongolian University of Medical Sciences as the name of “Department of Family Medicine”. Professors Purevsukh, Sh. Sukhbaatar, D. Tseren-Ochir, D. Khorloo appointed and began to develop the curriculum for the primary care in four main specialties including internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology. In 1998, the Department of Laboratory, Imaging, Rehabilitation, and Nursing was merged with the Department of Family Medicine. Professor Odontuya.D appointed as head of the department and 14 teachers were included. Professors of the department are actively involved in the activities of non-governmental organizations such as the General Professional Sub-Council of the Ministry of Health, the Mongolian Association of Family Medicine Specialists, the Mongolian Association of Soum Physicians, and the Mongolian Palliative Care Association. We also involved in the development of dozens of documents, clinical guidelines and for improving the quality and accessibility of primary health care services in Mongolia, cooperating with individual groups and other professional organizations.

Training
Undergraduate training
V course of School of Medicine, VI course of School of Medicine: Internship clinical training, Clinical practice of the third course of the School of Medicine, Basic medical education of the second course, VI course of IAS / Family medicine /, VI course of IAS / Palliative care /, IV course of acupuncture at the Mongolian Academy of Medical Sciences, V course of public health school, Secondary courses of public health are provided with training on common clinical directions in primary health care and public health care.
Graduation training
The department organizes master and doctoral degree programs in family medicine, and professors work as supervisors and consultants of the research work. In total, more than 15 doctors and 50 masters successfully defended their dissertations under the guidance of the professors of the Department.
Postgraduate training
We are organizing a 2-year resident training for basic family medicine, a 1-year general vocational training, and a 3-month to 1-year continuous training for vocational guidance, specialization, and professional development. We are also successfully implementing a program to organize short-term training for family nurses for 3-6 months.
