Introduction
In 1947, the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry of the present School of Medicine, MNUMS was founded at existed Central Hospital of Ulaanbaatar City with professor G.Ya.Liberzon invited from formerly the Soviet Union together our national personnel Dr. G.Lodon (full-time faculty) graduated in 1947 from the Medical Faculty of the Mongolian State University and Dr. L.Dagzmaa (half-time faculty) graduated in 1938 from Omsk’s Medical Institute of the Russia.
The first national specialist in Neurology Dr. G.Lodon after completing his PhD dissertation under the direction of professor H.G.Khodos from the Irkutsk Medical Institute of Russia, in 1954 he was appointed head of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, and who served that responsibility as well as neurology consults until 1968. In 1962 Dr. D.Ravdandorj was recruited as the second full-time member of the Section of Neurology and after postdoctoral training he was been held following Chief of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry with title of associate professor from 1971 to 1985.
In 1969 Dr. G.Tsagaankhuu was selected as the faculty member at the Division of Neurology, then he completed his PhD in 1973 and held as the head of Neurology Division (1985-1995) and then chairman of the newly created Department of Neurology (1995-1998) during 13 years of the School of Medicine, MNUMS. In the time the study in Neurology focused on problems of cerebrovascular diseases, headaches, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and psychosomatic disorders.
The next leaderships of the department was Dr. D. Ulziybayar (1998-2003), Dr. L.Otgonbayar (2003-2012), Dr. A.Tovuudorj (2012-2018), and since 2018, Dr. D. Byambasuren works as the head of the Neurology department.

The Mission
The mission of our Neurology Department as major academic center is to provide really care to patients; to train the next generation of practitioners and neuroscientists; and to expand our knowledge of the causes, treatments and cures for neurological disease. When neurologists from all provinces of Mongolia are challenged by complex neurological problems, they turn to our faculty for its expertise in the many subspecialties of neurology.
The Department of Neurology is made up of clinical divisions and diagnostic unites.
The structure of the Department
The current Neurology department under the leadership associate prof. A.Tovuudorj(PhD), are worked academic strengths as professor G.Tsagaankhuu (PhD), associate prof. Professional activities
Mongolian Neurology Society
Japan Neuroscience Society
Research interest
Neural mechanism of stress response
Stress-induced disease mechanism
Neuroendocrine function
Current research project
Project title: “Role of oxytocin receptor-expressing neurons in stress response”
Brief summary: Previously I found that physiologically induced stress, namely social defeat stress activates oxytocin-oxytocin receptor systems and facilitates a specific response during stress. Currently, I am exploring the role of oxytocin receptor-expressing neurons in the social brain area, including the ventrolateral hypothalamic nucleus by using the latest experimental techniques of neuroscience study.
