A brief history of the Department of Hematology
Hematology has been being taught in Mongolia since 1944 with the establishment of the Department of Internal Medicine at the National University of Mongolia. In 1958, Professor Ch. Tserennadmid, became the first hematologist to develop the field in Mongolia by setting up the Division of Hematology at the Medical faculty of NUM. In 1973, Department of Respiratory – Hematology, 1998 Department of Endocrine – Hematology under the Mongolian Medical University respectively supported research, education and clinical service on hematology until it became a separate unit as the Department Hematology on January 6th, 2010 in accordance with Resolution B-01 by the Rector. Doctor Sh. Jigjidsuren Ph.D., clinical professor N. Tuul, P. Enkhbaatar Ph.D., clinical professor N. Tuvshinbat were lecturing in the department. Since 1995, Hematology classes were taught and practiced separately from Respiratory based on its 30-bed clinical hospital. In 2000, the first hematology residency program has evolved in the country and as a result, produced 35 specialists so far. Now the Hematology Department has 5 full-time lecturers – 2 senior lecturers, 1 lecturer, and 2 assistant lecturers, of which 4 are PhDs and 3 are MSc.
